Since its establishment in April 2018, the Medical School of Tianjin University has consistently committed itself to advancing the Health China initiative and enhancing public health by developing innovative engineering techniques and fostering translational innovations. At the core of the Medical School, we concentrate on the 'Medicine +' direction of modern medical development, actively expanding the interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary aspects of medical talent education.
We currently have three disciplines—Biomedical Engineering, Intelligent Medical Engineering, and Clinical Medicine, with a student body exceeding 1,300, establishing a comprehensive talent cultivation system that encompasses bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees. After years of dedicated development, our Biomedical Engineering has ranked sixth in the 2024 ShanghaiRanking's list of Best Chinese Majors Ranking, while our Intelligent Medical Engineering is the first undergraduate program in China focused on intelligent technology in the field of medicine, achieving an A+ ranking in 2023 and 2024. In addition, our Clinical Medicine has entered the top ESI 1% of disciplines globally. In this September, we set up the first brain-computer interface program in China to cultivate interdisciplinary personnel.
In terms of faculty, the Medical School boasts an impressive roster of scholars and seasoned medical experts, including academicians from the Chinese Academy of Engineering, the French National Academy of Medicine, and the Royal Academy of Engineering in the UK, as well as experts with special government allowances from the China State Council, recipients of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, national leading talents, and winners of the National Science Fund for Excellent Young Scholars. The faculty is characterized by its internationalization and dynamic teaching teams, with many professors having studied abroad at prestigious institutions. What’s more, we have 7 affiliated hospital and 6 medical centers, most of them are Top-tier hospitals.
Over the years, we have strategically advanced in research areas such as brain science and neuroengineering, intelligent medicine, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, anesthesiology and critical care, rehabilitation medicine, specialized medicine, precision diagnosis and treatment, and nanomedicine, actively promoting the integration of emerging medical fields with Tianjin University's leading disciplines.
We have undertaken a lot of major national scientific and technological projects, and successively established several national and provincial-level platforms: National Key Laboratory of Advanced Medical Materials and Devices, National Health and Medical Big Data Research Institute, the Ministry of Education's Engineering Research Center for Intelligent Medical Engineering, the Ministry of Education's Innovation Center for Basic Medical Research in Neurocritical Care, and the Haihe Laboratory for Brain-Computer Interaction and Human-Machine Integration. Our faculty members have set three world records in non-invasive brain-computer interaction performance metrics, developed the first BCI chips, completed the first human space BCI experiment, released the world's first open-source on-chip brain-computer system.
